The internet is full of so much information on how to start making money, you can be consumed by just creating a profile on a Freelancing website, but unfortunately, this is not true. Graphic design is not a hobby that can be developed in one DIY session. It is an art form, a combination of creativity and effective application. Graphic design is not an activity, but outgoing creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas.


There are many courses available online or in universities around the world where graphic design is taught and students learn it for years, and if graphic design was so easy that it could be summed up in one YouTube video or 1 blog article, then no one in the world would spend so much time teaching or learning it. All those YouTube videos that claim to teach you:

  • "Earn $10/day  as a graphic designer"
  • "How to make money at home without  investment"
  • "Freelance graphic work from home  


These are all just clickbait, they may or may not teach you how to make money online, but they definitely make money from these fake videos because they get you to click on it. Making money online is possible, but it can't happen overnight, so stop wasting your time with these fake clickbait scams.

These websites are the main reason why graphic design is one of the most underrated creative jobs in today's world. They are filled with millions of designers hungry for work and ready to throw themselves into all kinds of work, regardless of the fact that all work is worth whatever they get. Customers who request designs are the ones who decide the final price and usually start from the lowest, such as a logo design for $5. The sad thing is that the ratio of supply and demand is so skewed that people are ready to do such cheap jobs. With these fake and click bait videos and articles, everyone thinks they can become a graphic designer from home and make a lot of money. And to top it all off, these websites allow anyone to create a profile on them for free without having any professional proof or work history in the same field. And even if you're a good designer to stand out from the herd, you've undermined your value, which actually brings us back to where we started.



So here's an alarm clock for you! You can't become a freelance graphic designer overnight. You have to work hard for it!


Leaving these freelance websites aside, we come to some platforms that promote good design and help you build a portfolio as well, such as Behance, Dribble etc. However, in this age of social media presence where every other Influencer, It's hard to stand out with only quality work. Personally, I've been freelancing for a year now and here's what I've learned so far and believe me, I'm still learning every day:

It's the most important step in the beginning of your freelance journey, update your crazy portfolio. Anyone looking for work from you or someone you approach will rely entirely on your industry experience and would like to see some relevant samples of your work. So it is absolutely important to have an updated portfolio with the kind of work you have done or want to do in the future.



Keep Marketing: 


You need to constantly promote your work on social media. You can choose multiple platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook or one of them. if you have your own website or blog it will be a always plus point



Create, create and create: 


Keep creating. Graphic design evolves every day and you can learn new things every day, so it is important that you create new things regularly to stay informed about the latest developments in the field and attract more and more people to your regular work.



Learn to pitch and sell: 


Now is the time to become one hell of a multi tasker. There are stay-at-home moms who run a successful Etsy online store and sell things all over the world. So you can at least learn how to pitch your own work and sell it to that budding CEO you caught on one of your social media accounts. Go out there and present your work, it will fail the first few times and you will end up learning what not next time and that my friend is how you grow.


So go and work on your portfolio, there are many forms of graphic design like Branding | Packaging | Print Design | Typography | Illustration | Goods | Social media design etc. First you need to be clear about what exactly you want to design and don't say yes to any requests unless you are really interested. Graphic design is struggling because people are jumping on offers like $5 logo design and very few people are actually ready to pay what the design is really worth. And if you really want to successfully make a living online, keep creating good work and never settle for less than your worth.
